Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, a new beat ’em up addition to the classic franchise from developer Secret Base and publisher Modus Games, has just been announced with an official gameplay trailer. It will feature the iconic duo Billy and Jimmy Lee, and there will be two-player local coop.

Although a concrete release date has not been confirmed, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is slated for a fall release. It will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. You can watch today’s announcement trailer on the Modus Games YouTube channel:

Double Dragon was a genuine trailblazer for the genre, and remains a beloved series despite its unfortunate screen adaptations. The mechanics established a new kind of beat ’em up that would influence countless other games.

Today’s newly revealed title is a prequel with some roguelite twists. At first glance, this might sound divisive for Double Dragon fans who prefer the pure brawling experience of the originals. But the core gameplay should largely remain the same.

According to the Steam page, players will simply have the opportunity to upgrade their characters, save cash for reviving, and select missions to influence the way they progress. There will also be thirteen playable characters in total, which is a decent roster for a retro game.

All of these features are probably a fine way to shake up expectations for modern audiences, without losing the arcade charm. Everything in Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons looks just a little bit smoother, but the worlds, characters and music do seem to keep the attitude of a bygone era.
