Beholgar, 2022’s metroidvania adventure from developer and publisher Serkan Bakar, has started production on physical editions, including a Collector’s Edition with neat exclusives.
Spanish video game publisher and distributor Tesura Games announced the physical editions last year. Although they haven’t revealed an official launch date, their online store now has a release date for March 31st, 2023. The store may have updated this before intended.
This seems feasible either way, since publisher Dolores Entertainment tweeted that production started today, announcing that fans can begin pre-ordering the game:
Beholgar is sort of a hidden gem, receiving more praise than players, which is a shame. It succeeds as a simple metroidvania, although it’s received some criticism for the disruptive mechanics and a few technical drawbacks. Also, the difficulty has come into question from players, but that is generally subjective. Others have considered it balanced in the context of the genre.
Beholgar’s art design is certainly gorgeous, and alongside the soundtrack, it’s a terrific love letter. Hopefully, the new physical editions convince new audiences to give this one a try, because the dev team is pretty creative and deserves to expand their library.
The physical editions boast some great artwork for the cover, which can often be more important for retro titles, which need to recapture the bygone eras in every aspect of their release.
The Collector’s Edition contains the soundtrack and an art book, as expected. But there’s a double-sided poster, which is a nice way to get more than one in a single purchase, and the collectible coin is naturally a standout. It’s unclear what material the coin is made out of, but the details look fantastic regardless of the quality.
