BioWare is officially letting go of MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic, which will continue being developed by Broadsword, according to a new official blog post.
EA will remain the publisher, and most of the current Star Wars: The Old Republic team members are expected to contribute to its future. The blog also mentions that “all current plans are still in place”, so the transition doesn’t seem to be disrupting content, either.

Star Wars: The Old Republic originally launched over a decade ago and remains a beloved MMORPG. It’s an immersive and authentic experience, successfully capitalizing on the full breadth of Star Wars lore in interesting ways.
BioWare has declared they will use the handover of Star Wars: The Old Republic to place new focus on their hit Dragon Age and Mass Effect games. Ultimately, this seems like a win all around for the franchises involved, assuming that Broadsword can retain a consistent level of quality for Star Wars.
Broadsword is best known for Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot, so they have a reputation for successful MMORPGs. Handing them the Star Wars sandbox could bring an interesting new vision for The Old Republic, with fresh ideas that longtime Star Wars fans may not otherwise consider.
The next Galactic Season is due “in the coming months”, as well as Game Update 7.4 and more. Today’s blog mentions that fans will be updated soon about the game’s direction and upcoming improvements. Alongside the big emphasis on current plans remaining intact, this statement about the game’s direction seems to hint at something new.
Star Wars is as flexible and expansive as any developer could hope for, but hopefully Broadsword will honor the extensive history that players have invested into The Old Republic for so many years.
