Blumhouse Productions, one of the leading horror film companies in the film industry, has revealed today that their newly established Blumhouse Games “plans to make a few original games a year”. Zach Wood and Don Sechler will run the new expansion of Blumhouse’s highly profitable business model. Here’s a tweet from Blumhouse’s official feed:
Blumhouse Productions is probably best known for producing Jordan Peele movies. But the company has also produced horror hits like the Insidious franchise, and more recently, runaway hit M3GAN.
Blumhouse strategically produces low-budget horror films with high concepts, so that risks are low, and profits are high. This approach has also allowed the company to indulge stories that are more patient, quiet, and thoughtful, per Get Out.
They tend to have ambitious ideas that are balanced out by intimate character studies. This general tone should be a terrific fit for the gaming industry, if the games are consistent with the films and equally inspired.
Some fairly large IP has been handled at Blumhouse before, including the Halloween franchise, though its reboot trilogy has been divisive.
Most notably, Blumhouse Productions is currently working on an adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s, which has struggled to reach the big screen for quite some time. Actors are already in place, and fans are already curious if Blumhouse Games will elaborate on the gaming side of the IP. Many responses took the opportunity to joke about the relationship.
That Five Nights atFreddy’s connection may have been the spark that encouraged Blumhouse to expand into the gaming industry. According to the breaking interview linked in the tweet above, Jason Blum will continue to support smaller titles that will cost less to develop in the gaming industry, too.
