Buddy Simulator 1984, the indie sim RPG from developer and publisher Not a Sailor Studios, is finally going to launch on PlayStation and Xbox on April 6th, 2023. It will be available on both current and last-gen consoles. You can purchase Buddy Simulator 1984 today on PC and the Nintendo Switch. Buddy Simulator 1984 is a relentlessly creative game, with an incredible sense of strangeness and even some genuine sentimentality. Today’s trailer for the new console porting is both mysterious and engaging, smartly using music, its absence, and striking visuals to keep audiences surprised.
However, frightening images and glitches abound hint at something a little more sinister than the game itself. Many players were taken aback by the tender, emotional center that may very well have you reflect on your own relationships. This may leave some players disappointed, since it isn’t an outright horror game.
Buddy Simulator 1984 launched back in 2021, but it is likely a better fit on PC and Nintendo Switch. The former has more purity in the experience, since the setting is the 80’s. But the Switch lets players take their buddy on the go, and that adds an entirely different layer to the story.
It remains to be seen if the story will be quite as effective on a console, since there is generally more distance, so the immersion might suffer just a bit.
However, it’s great to see that more audiences will be able to try this one out. It will definitely intrigue players if it ever ends up on the subscription services for PlayStation and Xbox. It’s one of those indies that you’re likely to love once you convince yourself to actually step into it.
