Supercell, the developer and publisher of Clash of Clans, has just announced that the popular mobile game will be adapted into a “new graphic novel series” next year. Volume 1 is available for pre-order today, and it will release on May 30th, 2023.
Clash of Clans’ big comic debut will be penned by Gene Luen Yang, a longtime powerhouse in their industry. They’ve worked since the early thousands, and have successfully elaborated on some of the most beloved IP.
This includes Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is still considered one of the most sophisticated, charming, and beautiful animated series. It was no small task to live up to those expectations, and it even had to tie in with The Legend of Korra. Yang’s writing in this world was compelling, and displayed a fine understanding of the existing characters.
Yang is a massive win for Clash of Clans, which has the potential for some epic storytelling. The game launched a full decade ago, but mobile games tend to have unusual legs in the gaming industry when they succeed. The mobile scene has to tap into a very different playstyle, and Clash of Clans really understood what players were looking for from the genre.
For now, there aren’t many details about the story that fans should expect. However, the post included in Supercell’s announcement adds that the new graphic novels will concentrate on the backstories of “fan-favorite characters”.
Despite the game’s age, Clash of Clans continues to perform pretty well, and it’ll be neat to explore its mythology a bit more. But it’s hard to tell how many fans are really looking for this kind of adaptation.
It might renew some interest from newer players. The biggest draw is undoubtedly Yang, who has the responsibility of adding more depth here, both renewing interest and satisfying fans that have played over the last ten years.
