The Outbound Ghost, a charming adventure RPG from indie developer Conradical Games, released late last year and was promptly tied up in severe legal issues.
As a result, updates have been limited, and there’s been a lot of concern from Kickstarter backers. Rewards haven’t come through, and with the announcement of Soul Stalker, it seemed that The Outbound Ghost might have been cast aside.
However, in a new update today, Conradical Games has reassured fans that they will continue pressing forward for The Outbound Ghost issues to be resolved, and for fans to receive what was promised. They explained that Soul Stalker is an effort to “keep the studio alive” amongst legal fees. You can find the full statement on a Kickstarter post included in today’s tweet:
Naturally, there’s been a lot of buzz about the state of The Outbound Ghost and behind-the-scenes conflicts. But the fans finally have a fair explanation, and Conradical Games acknowledged that although the mess might have broken trust with players, they intend to make things right.
Hopefully legal concerns don’t compromise art, since the upcoming Soul Stalker does look like an enjoyable follow-up. Soul Stalker was just announced last week, a survivor roguelike influenced by runaway hit Vampire Survivors:
Soul Stalker features the same art style as The Outbound Ghost, so the novelty is lost a bit. But Soul Stalker is built on an equally clever supernatural premise, and the roguelike genre feels more natural for the developer.
The new genre offers a chance to work out some of the hiccups that frustrated fans about Outbound Ghost’s storytelling and mechanics. Released footage of Soul Stalker has more contained environments, simpler mechanics, and other tidy features that should be more accessible. It seems like plenty of fun, and hopefully more is revealed soon.
