Cowboys & Rustlers, an upcoming top-down action RPG from developer Sigur Studio and publisher Games Operators, has just been revealed with a brief gameplay trailer. A release window has not been announced, but you can wishlist the game on Steam today. IGN revealed the full announcement trailer on their YouTube channel here:
Cowboys & Rustlers appears to be a spiritual successor to Rustler (Grand Theft Horse), and both of them were published by Games Operators. Cowboys & Rustlers isn’t just similar in name, but also in tone and mechanics. It aims for something equally tongue-in-cheek, with the same top-down chaos and surprises.
At a time when supernatural horror is dominating the Wild West theme in gaming, it’s nice to see something that isn’t so self-serious. Today’s trailer shows off some action sequences that nearly reach the heights of Goat Simulator, between strange activities, unexpected physics, and talking horses.
This is hardly a revolutionary premise, but at least Cowboys & Rustlers is making the most of it. The dialogue may even turn out to be just as amusing.
And although Cowboys & Rustlers basically looks like more of the same, compared to Rustler (Grand Theft Horse), it doesn’t look any less entertaining. The art design hasn’t elaborated any, but if it looked any clearer or prettier, it may have actually compromised the tone.
Also, at least the mechanics look just as explosive. The world feels very destructible, but it’s a little unclear just how much freedom players will have. There is a poker mini game in today’s trailer. But it’d be nice if the world could be explored in full, and for now, it seems like there’s enough of a story to keep things on rails a bit.
