Critical Rabbit, a German indie studio previously known as Bunspecht Games, has just unveiled their brand-new website and more details about their next game Midcard. It’s been revealed that Midcard will be a competitive online multiplayer game featuring Viking robots, mixing 2D platforming and deckbuilding mechanics.

Critical Rabbit recently announced that their current project Fall of Porcupine would launch on June 15th, 2023. It will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and current or last-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Here’s the new website and Midcard announcement from Critical Rabbit’s official Twitter feed:

Critical Rabbit has been very busy, and their recent changes have seen some remarkable improvements that line up with the team’s incredible games. Like their new logo, the fresh site update is more colorful and friendly. It’s also a welcome surprise to finally learn more about Midcard, which has been teased on Critical Rabbit’s Twitter account for a little while.

The basic mechanics have been revealed, as well as a handful of marketing images and in-game screenshots. Midcard will blend Norse mythology with classic sci-fi robots, but the resulting art design isn’t a splashy mess. Instead, the visuals are actually quite nuanced, using the gloom and grit of Norse mythology’s rugged edge to the point that some sample images are in black and white.

There also seems to be a closer focus on platforming than expected. It could potentially land somewhere between Speedrunners and Super Smash Bros., but the deckbuilding elements are a compelling curveball.

The devs included both online PvP and 1v1 battles, which is thematic and really emphasizes competition. It seems very unlikely that Midcard will have casual gameplay, and that’s probably for the better.
