Kujlevka, an upcoming sci-fi adventure indie from developer Callback and publisher Crytivo, has just been announced with a new gameplay trailer. Kujlevka is slated to launch on April 6th, 2023. It will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. You can watch the full announcement trailer on Crytivo’s official YouTube channel here:
Today’s trailer for Kujlevka begins as one might expect from an “alien encounter adventure”, but it quickly subverts expectations. The classic imagery of a traditional UFO or alien experience is traded for a story that’s more interested in the ensuing social drama.
It’s a welcome surprise, and all of the imagery that follows is quite paranormal. This compelling approach may bring to mind elements of Childhood’s End, especially with an ongoing study of human dreams and desires.
The trailer simply has an overall strangeness about it, which is very effective. There are a variety of events that appear to be unrelated, and the homely nature of the music has a distinct contrast with the chaos.
The game also appears to be proudly set in a very clear time and place, with lots of cultural flavor. Hopefully, the commentary will be distinguishable from current events, which have troubled much larger titles like Atomic Heart. At the very least, it’d be nice to see something with brighter points of view in a game that is so interested with history.
The art design is fairly simple, and almost rather friendly. This will likely be somewhat detrimental to the game, but the imagery itself can be creative at times. It would have been nice if the visuals could better reinforce the intimate, ambitious tone of the plot. But Crytivo is definitely broadening its horizons with an experience as unique as this.
