Curse of the Sea Rats, a hand-drawn metroidvania featuring pirate rats from developer Petoons Studio and publisher PQube, has just announced that it will launch on April 6th, 2023. It will be available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and the Nintendo Switch. Here’s the new trailer today, showcasing a variety of bosses, from PlayStation’s YouTube channel:
Curse of the Sea Rats was first announced years ago, but more recently, there was a new character trailer featuring the heroes. Only the latter included a few voice lines, which were fine. But today’s trailer was stuffed with a variety of performances that just felt a little underwhelming. They didn’t seem to capture the same swashbuckling camp.
Also, the trailer closes with an odd Godfather reference that continues to function as a meme now and then. Of course, performance is subjective, so you can review the previous character trailer and judge for yourself:
Either way, the art design and mechanics of the bosses still look absolutely gorgeous. The hand-drawn effort has clearly paid off, proving the indie studios from Barcelona has plenty of creativity to spare.
The bosses revealed today have interesting environments and mechanics that make the most of them, hinting at an expansive story. This includes a more supernatural villain, called the Necromancer. It’s a smart move for the game to lean into its fantasy elements a bit more, given the premise.
It’s a shame that the release date has been set for the first week of April, when previous steps of the marketing insisted Curse of the Sea Rats would arrive in “Early 2023”. It still counts, but it’s later than expected. With that much distance, there may be at least one more trailer before launch. But at least the wait should be worthwhile for this promising adventure.
