During an interview with IGN, Squanch Games, the creators of High on Life and its recently announced DLC, High on Knife, unveiled some behind-the-scenes information. It turns out that the well-known actor Danny DeVito, known for his role in Always Sunny in Philadelphia, was initially approached to lend his voice to the character Gene Zaroothian in High on Life.
Meyr, one of the members of Squanch Games, reminisced about their “white whale.” Spano, another member of the team, explained, “That was one of the few where, I don’t know that it was like a no, I just think that they didn’t really even understand what we were asking for.” He then admitted that despite the initial plans, he can’t imagine anyone other than David Herman providing the voice of Gene now.
Yet, the aspiration of involving DeVito in their project isn’t completely extinguished. Spano commented, “we’ll probably poke Danny DeVito again” for something else.
Gene Zaroothian is a prominent figure in High on Life, acting as a mentor and handler to the protagonist. He was once a famed bounty hunter, adding depth to his character.
The universe of High on Life will continue to expand with the upcoming DLC, High on Knife, set two years after the original game’s conclusion.
Without revealing too much, Squanch Games hinted at a shift in the vibe for the DLC, mentioning it will retain its humorous and weird aspects while adding a touch of spookiness. While not promising outright terror, the developers suggest that things could get a bit unsettling, pushing the boundaries of their world and characters. Players are advised to keep an open mind and prepare for the unexpected.
