The much-anticipated DayZ 1.21 update is now available across all platforms, bringing an array of medieval-themed additions, numerous bug fixes, and gameplay enhancements.

This update brings a unique twist with the introduction of medieval times, including the debut of DayZ’s first spring-powered weapon: the crossbow. This versatile weapon shoots bolts that can be recovered, although they lose durability with each hit. If players misplace a bolt, improvised versions can be crafted as a replenishing source.

In addition to the crossbow, the update sprinkles the game world with an array of medieval-themed items and clothing. Without revealing too many details to maintain the element of surprise, the variety is wide enough for players to equip their survivor like a knight, prepared for a castle siege.

Fans of last year’s Lights Out event would be pleased to know that the winning flags are now a part of the game, discoverable in Livonia. Meanwhile, server owners are provided with better support for spawning bushes, trees, and rocks, promising more immersive gameplay.

The update also includes a host of bug fixes, ranging from PlayStation crashes when searching for servers without an internet connection, to issues with the audible proximity chat on Xbox when in Party Chat. This comprehensive fix list ensures a smoother and more stable gameplay experience for players across platforms.

Additionally, the 1.21 update introduces several new features and gameplay improvements. These include UI brightness adjustments, the addition of a status icon for mild leg injuries, and support for the “Players Met” function on PlayStation. It also makes the character spawn with items pre-assigned to their Quickbar, providing a more user-friendly experience.

In terms of central economy adjustments, character and server persistence files have been wiped on official servers to freshen up the experience. This wipe, however, is not mandatory for community servers.

Apart from the medieval-themed additions, a variety of items have been added, including a sword, mace, chainmail, chainmail leggings, chainmail coif, Norse Helm, chest plate, medieval boots, wool gloves with fingerless and color variants, and feathers. Game hints have also been added to the loading screen.

In response to feedback, several fixes were implemented to enhance the overall gaming experience. These fixes address a range of issues, from game crashes and exploits to stealth kills and camera glitches. It also fixes problems related to inventory management, glitching through walls, unrealistic temperatures displayed by thermometers, and desynchronization issues.

Changes have also been made in the 1.21 update to improve the gameplay, including the reworking of falling damage depending on height, adjustments to the sounds of doors with valve locks, changes to the horn sound of the M3S truck, and increasing the audibility of explosions.

The Chernarus economy files, which previously included Livonia animal territories, have been corrected. The Chernogorsk football field in Chernarus has also been updated.

On the server side, a range of additions, changes, and fixes have been implemented. New server config parameters have been added, server logging for raising/lowering flags at flag poles has been implemented, and inconsistencies in the admin logs have been rectified.

While the 1.21 update brings significant improvements, the developers acknowledge a few known issues that are currently in testing for resolution.

Full details on the patch can be found on the official DayZ website.
