Dead by Daylight, the asymmetric multiplayer survival horror game developed by Canadian studio Behaviour Interactive, is set to be adapted into a Hollywood horror film.
According to Variety, American film and television production companies Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, are working with Behaviour Interactive to create a feature film based on Dead by Daylight. Both production companies have already established a reputation for producing several hit horror movies.
Atomic Monster has produced films in The Conjuring Universe, Lights Out, Mortal Kombat, Malignant, and M3GAN. Mortal Kombat is their first attempt at adapting a video game into a movie. It has raked in a total of $84.4 million in sales all around the globe. Some critics described it to be a long cry from the high-quality adaptation that many had hoped for, yet there are some good aspects to make it decent entertainment.
Blumhouse Productions have already worked alongside Atomic Monster in the latest M3GAN film and has produced films like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge, Split, Get Out, Happy Death Day, Halloween, and Us, among other things. Unlike Atomic Monster, Blumhouse has just recently entered the video game movie adaptation arena, as they were reported to be in charge of the production of an untitled Five Nights at Freddy’s film, which began shooting in February 2023.
Over the years, video game movie adaptations have been regarded to not often go particularly well – a phenomenon that has been referred to as the “Videogame Movie Curse.” While this phenomenon is likely to be a myth, it is inevitable for fans of the source material to be overly critical of the adaptation as some are unable to separate the original from the adaptation.
A Dead by Daylight movie adaptation may not be safe from this so-called curse, but it will be interesting to see how the story of this game will be interpreted for the big screen. This is particularly fascinating considering that its story has only been primarily depicted in trailers and Archive cutscenes.
