The Den of Wolves trailer didn’t really show what the game was about, but an interview with PCGamesN showed they intended to rival Payday 3. The launch of Payday 3 was not smooth, and plenty of players have stuck to Payday 2, which shows the sequel was not good enough for many players. Den of Wolves, made by former developers of the Payday franchise, aims to give Payday a run for its money.
In the interview, Simon Viklund, co-founder of 10 Chambers, did not hold back his criticism of Payday 3. He believes that Starbreeze, the developers of Payday 3, “played it very safe” and did not take enough risks to differentiate the new game from the previous one. Instead of relying on the existing fanbase of Payday 2, he says they should have invested in creating new content and features.
“I mean, Payday 2 is their IP, so they’re still making money from that if people are still buying DLC from their previous game… But they should take the money that they’re making from that game and put it towards making Payday 3 even better”
Simon Viklund
Viklund, who served as creative director and sound designer on the first Payday game, sees Den of Wolves as an opportunity to offer players a fresh take on the co-op heist genre. Assassination, espionage, and sabotage will be incorporated into Payday’s familiar co-op heist action. Viklund believes this new approach will appeal to Payday fans looking for something new and attract new players.
It’s true that Payday 3‘s reception has clearly opened up a space in the co-op heist genre for new contenders. Even though Den of Wolves is still in development, it has already generated significant buzz among heist fans. It has developers who helped make Payday what it is and are willing to take risks to be the best.
Viklund acknowledges that Starbreeze already has a significant player base for Payday 2 but believes this could ultimately hamper Payday 3’s success. He was honest in his opinion but believes that Payday 3 can still gain the player base from Payday 2. He didn’t wish Starbreeze anything but success, but he still wants his game to succeed as an option for heist fans.
