Destiny 2 is bringing on Ghost Busters, but it's not being received as well as they'd like.

Destiny 2 is introducing a crossover event with a paranormal theme in collaboration with Ghostbusters. This event, launching on March 19, 2024, will bring Ghostbusters-inspired items such as a ship, Ghost Shell, and Sparrow to the Eververse store. Notably, this collaboration coincides with the release of the new Sony-produced Ghostbusters film, Frozen Empire, on March 22.

This tweet marks a change in Destiny 2’s partnership approach. While previous collaborations were mainly with well-known gaming series like Fortnite, Assassin’s Creed, and Mass Effect, the Ghostbusters collaboration is significant as it involves a Sony movie. If you look at the tweet announcement’s comments, you’ll see the general consensus on how it’s been taken.

It’s strange to have a random movie tie-in. Some commenters worry that this may water down the game’s distinctive sci-fi fantasy essence. Others believe that the game’s increased focus on microtransaction-based partnerships, especially those related to external media promotions, indicates a concerning prioritization of making money. With Destiny 2 in hot water with its fanbase, it’s hard to imagine this will make things any better.

While some people like it when different things come together, there’s a question about how often these combinations should continue. The Ghostbusters crossover outside of Halloween feels really strange. This is just to advertise the movie and make a quick buck, and it feels like no real thought went into the player base.

We’ll have to see how successful it is, but if I were a real fan of Destiny 2, I wouldn’t be happy to see a random microtransaction like this. This isn’t just something being pushed as a sale; it’s a reminder of a movie that has nothing to do with the game; it’s like being advertised to.
