Hauma, an upcoming noir-inspired visual novel from developer SenAm Games and publisher Assemble Entertainment, has just been announced with a Fall 2023 release window. It will feature a graphic novel art style, realistic depictions of Munich, and unique investigation mechanics.

Hauma will be available on PC via Steam and GOG, as well as the Nintendo Switch. Players can try out a demo and free prologue, which are available now on Steam. You can watch the full announcement trailer on the Assemble Team YouTube channel:

Being a visual novel, it’s a relief that Hauma absolutely nails the gritty detective world of noir. And thanks to its cool-toned color scheme, it manages to introduce a lot of splashy colors and patterns without losing the edge. It’ll be fascinating to see how the devs adapt real locations from Munich into their comic book art design.

Today’s trailer also appears to include a glimpse at the so-called “mindboard”, which will be the player’s inventory of ideas and thoughts. It’s a clever name for a basic yet helpful in-game feature, as the devs have stressed that puzzles and riddles will play a central role. Some comparable titles do just leave it to the player to jot things down elsewhere.

Aside from the visuals, the performances are also solid in today’s trailer. While that can make a difference for any visual novel, most noir stories are sure to be filled to the brim with pondering narration. Without a proper narrator, noir can feel very corny.

Judging by today’s trailer, there will also be a fair amount of action, though. The narrative has some terrific motion in its imagery. Those who already enjoy the genre will probably be pleased, and newcomers could simply be intrigued by the notion of visiting Munich.
