Diablo IV, the latest installment in the action role-playing game series by Blizzard Entertainment, has gone gold, signaling the game’s completion and readiness for a June 6th, 2023 release date. The term “going gold” refers to a game’s final build, signifying that it has passed all necessary testing and is prepared for mass production. Announced at BlizzCon 2019, Diablo IV has been eagerly anticipated by fans, who got a taste of the game during public betas in March 2023.
The game will feature five playable classes: Barbarian, Sorceress, Druid, Rogue, and Necromancer, each with unique abilities and combat styles. Diablo IV will retain the series’ core gameplay formula of defeating progressively difficult enemies to acquire stronger equipment, while also introducing new elements like an open world and player versus player (PVP) interactions.
Diablo IV’s story, described by creative director Sebastian Stepien as more “grounded” than its predecessor, will center on the simple folk of Sanctuary following the resurrection of the demon Lilith. Gameplay will involve players guiding their chosen character through quests and combat in procedurally generated dungeons, with loot-focused character-building making a return.
Character effectiveness in combat will be determined by attributes, with offensive stats like attack and critical chance boosting damage output, while defensive stats like elemental resistance and defense increase survivability. Three new attributes—Angelic, Demonic, and Ancestral Power—will be introduced, adding further depth to character progression.
Weapons and gear will be customizable through the use of runes and runewords, with trading and crafting options available, albeit limited to resources outside of the most powerful items. Limited-time seasons, which alter legendary powers to shift the meta-game, will also be featured in Diablo IV.
Microtransactions for cosmetic items will be included in the game, which will require an internet connection to be played. Character appearance, including portrait and skin color, will be customizable, with mount appearances also open to personalization. Furthermore, skill trees will allow players to tailor their characters’ abilities to their play style.
Fans can look forward to diving into the world of Sanctuary when the game releases on June 6th, 2023.
