Diablo 4, the latest installment in the iconic action RPG series, has garnered a lot of attention for its improved combat mechanics and stunning art. While many fans eagerly anticipate the game’s release, some are voicing concerns about the dungeon design. Based on Early Access Beta experiences, it appears that Diablo 4 may suffer from repetitive dungeon layouts, which could significantly impact replayability and the overall enjoyment of the game.

Repetitive Layouts and Lack of Randomization

One of the key aspects that made Diablo 1 and 2 popular was their randomized dungeon layouts. These designs provided a sense of exploration and discovery, which kept players engaged for hours on end. However, according to some beta testers, Diablo 4’s dungeons seem to be following the same linear and repetitive design as Diablo 3. Players have noticed that multiple dungeons share the same layouts, and even after replaying dungeons multiple times, there appears to be no variation in design.

This lack of randomization and complexity could be a significant drawback for the game. Fans have expressed disappointment in seeing reused patterns from some of the most poorly designed dungeons in any ARPG. With all the dungeons in the game, it’s worrisome that the developers might not have learned from past mistakes.

Locked Doors and Backtracking

Adding to the frustration, Diablo 4 has introduced locked doors that require players to backtrack through cleared dungeons to unlock them. This design choice means that a significant portion of gameplay is spent traversing the same linear paths, with players out of combat for extended periods.

Limited Boss Variety

Beta testers have also reported that the game has only around six dungeon bosses, which players will need to fight multiple times throughout the dungeons. This lack of variety could lead to a monotonous gaming experience, far removed from what the Diablo series is known for.

The Need for Complexity

To truly capture the essence of what made Diablo 1 and 2 great, Diablo 4 needs to introduce labyrinth-like dungeons with greater complexity. Some players are longing for an experience reminiscent of the Durance of Hate from Diablo 2, which is sorely missing in the current dungeon designs.

While Diablo 4’s combat and art have shown great potential, the lack of randomized, complex dungeons could prove to be its Achilles heel. Repetitive layouts, backtracking, and limited boss variety may hinder the game’s long-term appeal. To avoid repeating past mistakes and to deliver the gaming experience that Diablo fans have been waiting for, the developers need to take these concerns into account and give us the complexity and randomness that made the series a classic in the first place.
