Discord, the popular communication platform, is set to make significant changes to its username and identity systems. The platform, which has allowed users to select any desired username and pair it with a random four-digit code, will soon require unique usernames for everyone.

The decision to change the username system was not taken lightly, according to Discord’s Co-Founder. The platform was initially designed as a place for friends to hang out while playing games, with the goal of making it easy for users to connect. However, as Discord grew, technical debt from early design choices led to the current system, which has resulted in difficulties connecting with friends.

One of the main problems with the current system is that usernames can be complicated and hard to remember or share. Users have reported issues like difficulty remembering discriminators or specifying which letters are uppercase and lowercase, as well as trouble finding friends who have changed their names to include special characters.

Research by Discord revealed that more than 40% of users struggle to remember their discriminator, and almost half of all friend requests fail to connect users due to incorrect or invalid username inputs. The platform has decided that a comprehensive and robust long-term solution is necessary to address these issues and improve the overall user experience.

The new system will consist of a unique alphanumeric username, without a discriminator, that will be used solely for connecting with other users and telling them apart when checking profiles. These usernames will be limited to lowercase characters, numbers, and two special characters (period and underscore), making them easier to remember and share. Users will also have a non-unique Display Name, which can include special characters, spaces, emojis, and non-Latin characters, for personalization. Display Names can be changed whenever users want, providing flexibility and customization.

Discord plans to roll out the new username system in the coming weeks, notifying users when they can update their accounts. The transition will be gradual, taking place over several months, with priority given to longtime Discord users when choosing new usernames. The company acknowledges that the change may be challenging for some users, but believes it is the right decision to make connecting with friends on the platform easier and more enjoyable.
