Disney Speedstorm, the highly anticipated Disney-themed kart game from developer and publisher Gameloft, will officially launch into Early Access on April 18th, 2023. This follows the surprising delay in November, when it was explained that the devs wanted to add more content.
Today’s new trailer mentions that the Early Access launch will be available on both PC and consoles. That would include the Nintendo Switch, as well as current and last gen PlayStation or Xbox platforms. You can watch the full release date trailer on the official Epic Games YouTube channel here:
Disney Speedstorm has strategically rolled out a series of videos elaborating on the various mechanics of the game, renewing interest now and then. Most of the footage has been met with praise. It would be all too easy to let the game rely on IP power alone, but some of the racing and kart features look solid.
The art design also manages to successfully capture the spirit of the characters, most of the time. Since Mario Kart continues to dominate the genre, theme plays a larger role for competing titles. Fortunately, the tracks and karts that have been revealed each seem to make the most of their corresponding world.
Hero-based abilities are also a nice touch, giving the individual racers more personality. Today’s trailer also highlights one of the more ambitious and anticipated features, cross-play, which is a win for any game.
Expectations will be high for a smooth launch and lots of content, especially after the delay. But it is still an Early Access release, and a full launch will surely be a long way off. So, there’ll be plenty of time to sort things out. For now, it looks like a promising kart game that actually bothered to put in some effort.
