FUR Squadron, an upcoming Star Fox-like arcade shooter from developer and publisher Raptor Claw, is officially going to be available on PlayStation and Xbox thanks to publisher Dolores Entertainment.
FUR Squadron will also be available on PC and the Nintendo Switch. It’s expected to launch on March 17th, 2023, for Steam and Nintendo Switch. Here’s the new platform announcement from Dolores Entertainment’s Twitter feed:
Star Fox remains one of the most beloved action shooters in the genre, mainly due to some terrific flight mechanics, compelling lore and iconic characters.
It’s frankly a little surprising that no one bothered to mine the franchise’s style very much. Now, fans of the classic series and genre will be able to enjoy a similar experience with some of its own glorious music and a playful sense of humor.
FUR Squadron absolutely belongs on the Nintendo Switch, given the overt nods to Star Fox and the natural ability to fit with mobile gaming. However, it is definitely exciting to see the potential audiences broaden to more consoles.
As always, the opportunity to join subscription services is helpful. It’d be terrific if modern audiences tried out an obscure indie, supporting a small studio and discovering Star Fox, too. Further, joining PlayStation opens up the possibility of a VR port sometime later.
While FUR Squadron is certainly a nostalgia trip with many familiar enemy vehicles and obstacles in space, it does have its own lore. Not only is the axolotl completely adorable, the in-game story works in the poly graphics style as a literal virtual world.
Although FUR Squadron is a little shameless, the devs clearly nailed the retro style they were aiming for. It looks like plenty of fun in its own right, and few shooter fans are going to ignore something so inexpensive and cheerful.
