Dread Templar, a revenge shooter set in hell with some puzzle elements, is finally getting a full release later this month, after remaining in early access since 2021. Originally scheduled for a Fall 2022 launch, the full game is now expected to release on January 26th, 2023. It will be available on PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. Here’s the full release date trailer from publisher Fulqrum Publishing:
Dread Templar is a niche retro game that pays homage to 90’s FPS hits. That era was an unusual and middling position for the genre, where burgeoning mechanics were still being defined and graphics weren’t quite up to par just yet.
But Dread Templar proves that your nostalgia is justified, because its stylized trailers continue to impress. Granted, it also aims to include modern mechanics and concepts, bolstering the setting and making it more accessible for new audiences.
Player responses to the early access version of the game have been largely positive. However, Dread Templar has also been limited to just a few missions, and it’s only available in the English language. More importantly, Dread Templar has been in early access for a very long time, and it might take some effort to build traction with new players again for the full game.
According to the official Steam page, the full release plans to pile on nearly double the amount of content, and include a variety of new languages. An official blog post today elaborated on that, confirming there will be text localization for nine total languages. It’ll be interesting to see how non-English audiences respond to this niche genre.
There will also be “improved storytelling passages”, which is a little vague, but sounds promising. It seems to imply more content, but it could also simply mean that the devs polished up their existing story.
