Dreams in the Witch House, an upcoming open world point-and-click RPG from developer Atom Brain Games, has just revealed that it will launch on February 16th, 2023. It will be available on Steam and GOG. Today’s announcement was accompanied by an official gameplay trailer, from publisher Bonus Stage Publishing:
Lovecraft provided a very unique kind of psychological horror, but that also makes the IP very popular these days. It’s crucial to make something truly distinguishable, and today’s trailer suggests that Dreams in the Witch House definitely has that potential.
Atom Brain Games has chosen to directly adapt H.P. Lovecraft’s short story The Dreams in the Witch House, which was an ambitious move, but the trailer is pretty impressive. The patience and quirky nature of a point-and-click adventure have turned out to be the perfect way to build dread.
Today’s trailer cleverly wields the soundtrack and askew graphics to develop something pretty off-putting. Blending genres that generally do not agree with each other only adds to that sensation, which is truly the key to Lovecraft’s style.
According to Dream in the Witch House’s official Steam page, players will be afforded the opportunity to make choices that result in several different endings. This is practically an obligatory RPG mechanic these days, but it also fits the theme very well, and adds replay value as always.
Bonus Stage Publishing has also proven themselves a reliable champion of potent indies with lots of sincerity and passion. This includes the jazzy puzzle game The Forest Quartet, which launched in December, or Garden In!, which just released last week.
Atom Brain Games appears to be a solo dev, according to their Steam curator page, and hopefully this launch finds them an audience, because they seem to have a bright future.
