The Forest Quartet, an emotional indie puzzler from developer Mads & Friends, has just announced with a new trailer that it will launch on December 8th, 2022. It will be available on Steam, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Here’s the full trailer from publisher Bedtime Digital Games:

Bedtime Digital Games appears to favor a particular mood and aesthetic when it comes to publishing, since they recently teased a February 2023 launch for Figment 2: Creed Valley. That game also had a similar art design, which is composed of both delicate and intricate details.

The Forest Quartet has a specific kind of indie look that’s reminiscent of Inside, and although it’s centered on a ghost, it isn’t remotely based in the horror genre. The devs have taken a quiet and nuanced approach in order to discuss grief, which places The Forest Quartet closer to the narrative genre.

Still, the puzzles in today’s new trailer do look intriguing, offering surreal obstacles and the kind of surprises that jazz should entail. This includes a giant lightbulb, supernatural powers, and spooky shadowy enemies.

The “sentimental mood” is fitting for the jazzy premise, and it also resulted in a very compelling soundtrack. Fans of that music genre should be pleased, and perhaps reminded a bit of the movie Soul, which also used jazz to consider existential themes.

Although the voice acting could probably use some work, it’s clear that a lot of passion and sincerity went into The Forest Quartet. It couldn’t possibly be more niche, even as a puzzle game, but it certainly deserves another look. It’s surprising that the game will launch on PlayStation already, and hopefully that boosts audience attention, perhaps setting it up for a PS Plus release later on.
