Druidwalker, an upcoming relaxing roguelike from developer and publisher Coldwild Games, has set a Q2 2023 release window in an “updated announcement trailer” today. The devs previously aimed for a Q1/Q2 release in their original announcement trailer, so curious fans will have to wait a little longer.
Druidwalker will be available on Steam, and users can wishlist the game now. Here’s the new trailer from Coldwild Games’ official YouTube channel:
Druidwalker includes card mechanics, which also feature a hand-drawn art style that quite resembles children’s artwork. That youthful and innocent imagery is likely intended to emphasize the peaceful atmosphere. While that should be effective for some, others might be taken aback by the simplicity.
However, the character designs and settings are still very inventive. And the variety of colors creates some vibrant imagery, which pairs well with the soothing soundtrack.
These elements are all naturally invited by the clever premise of the game, where players assume the role of a druid who is preparing the forest for winter.
According to the game’s Steam page, there is no way to lose or die in the game, so it should be counted among purely meditative titles built to relax. The devs have effectively blended enough imaginative gameplay to balance out its patient qualities.
For example, the card-based exploration is commonly used for tabletop games, and that builds more movement than similar titles. Many serene indies focus on environments that are less layered, and tasks that are too easy, since it’s a very fine line to walk.
Coldwild Games has developed a number of roguelikes and shoot ’em ups, so it’s an interesting tangent, and hopefully they continue to expand in new directions. It’s clear they’re more than versatile enough.
