Playing Elden Ring is hard. Playing it with a keyboard and mouse? Even harder. But have you tried playing Elden Ring with your face? Reddit user SuavePirate just showed off their custom Elden Ring controls, which allow them to play the game in a way even FromSoftware never would have expected.
The custom controls are assisted by an AI of Pirate’s own design. By translating user input to Elden Ring’s control scheme, the system allows the player to play the game without using their hands. With vocal commands such as “block” “dodge” and “mount,” the AI interacts with the player’s Tarnished, executing all of their commands with only a minimal amount of delay.
SuavePirate shows off their amazing technology by fighting a few knights on the world map. Not only do they make quick work of the knights, they also shows the impressive limits of the tech in action by taking on the Putrid Treespirit and defeating it without too much damage taken. This test served not only to show us the responsiveness of the technology, but SuavePirate’s skill as an Elden Ring player, as they made impressive work of all the foes even with a delay in many of their actions.
The execution of Pirate’s commands by the AI is certainly impressive, even with the slight delay between speaking them and the Tarnished actually performing the action. With a bit of prediction, SuavePirate’s vocal commands were capable of pulling off blocks and parries I would have missed playing the game as intended.
Not only does the AI control system respond to vocal commands, but its sensitive enough that facial movements trigger actions in-game. That’s right, by simply smiling or flicking their head, SuavePirate was able to communicate attacks to the AI controls, and was able to kill more than a few enemies.
This technology is not only incredibly interesting, but it could do wonders for a market of people who want to play Elden Ring but can’t. Players with physical conditions affecting reflex time and other motor abilities can experience not only Elden Ring, but any video game they previously wouldn’t have access to thanks to this wonderful technology. Though still in development, with a little bit of work we’re sure to see SuavePirate’s amazing innovation opening up the Lands Between for a whole new wave of Tarnished to experience.
