Evil Dead: The Game, the asymmetrical horror hit from developer and publisher Saber Interactive, has finally revealed that fan favorite Ruby will join the game as a survivor on February 2nd, 2023. Ruby was prominently featured throughout Ash vs Evil Dead, a highly successful continuation of Sam Raimi’s beloved horror trilogy.

Here’s the big announcement from Evil Dead: The Game’s official feed, which includes a brief teaser with Ruby and hints about her abilities:

Given how frequently Ruby showed up as an enemy in Ash vs Evil Dead, it’s admittedly very neat to have a survivor that can also be villainous. Today’s announcement reveals that she’ll be able to gain perks by consuming enemy souls, though it’s unclear if this will abide by Kirby-style mechanics. It’d be nice if different enemies gave Ruby different perks, adding a little more strategy to the game.

Evil Dead: The Game is quickly approaching its first anniversary, and interest has steadily declined, as so many single-mode games do. Also, Evil Dead was always a cult franchise, so its audience was probably already a little niche, despite the success of the terrific TV series.

So, fans should be pleased to get some new content, and most responses have praised Ruby’s class alignment as a Leader. It was basically a no-brainer for the devs, since Lucy Lawless clearly defined the character that way in Ash vs Evil Dead. She was clever, powerful, and very charismatic, making her a perfect fit in Raimi’s universe.

Evil Dead: The Game has received a lot of mixed reviews, mainly for its faults in the asymmetrical horror genre rather than its interpretation of the Evil Dead franchise. The violence is brutal, bloody, and typically amusing. Key items from the universe are represented well too, and the IP turned out to be a snug fit for the genre. Hopefully even more characters and new modes will be added in over time.
