Fabledom, an upcoming casual and fairytale-themed city builder from Grenaa Games, Dear Villagers and Doyoyo Games, will officially launch on April 13th, 2023. Fabledom will be available on Steam, where users can wishlist the game today. You can watch today’s new release date trailer on the Dear Villagers YouTube channel here:
Fabledom has a very bright, soothing world, from the music to the soft visuals. And although a lot of this fairytale imagery is very traditional, that familiarity also lends a kind of coziness. It all feels very adorable and kid-friendly, with flying pigs, living trees, giants and witches.
The storybook approach will also reach into romance, which is only hinted at in today’s trailer. Fabledom’s official Steam page explains that romance is actually one of the more distinguishable features of the game, and will “strongly shape the way you play”.
In Early Access, Fabledom will have 8 princes and princesses “with their own unique storylines”. It would be very interesting if certain city building decisions will be necessary to win over and appease romantic interests throughout the game. It would also be neat if romancing someone in a nearby, feuding kingdom ends up with new trading options.
Learning motivations and establishing relationships would be very important for Fabledom. Even with more complex mechanics that allow players to interact with other kingdoms, Fabledom seems like a straightforward city builder with a simple fairytale makeover. But romance is a natural fit in this world and does sound promising.
Despite all of the gentle mechanics and storytelling, players will still get the chance to build an actual kingdom and defend it from enemies. Overall, Fabledom looks to be fairly balanced and perfectly fine. But it still needs to stand out in a very busy genre.
