Immortals of Aveum, an upcoming blend of magic and familiar first-person shooter mechanics from developer Ascendant Studios and publisher EA, has just released a lengthy new twitter thread elaborating on key lore and characters. This includes a backstory for the protagonist Jak, as well as more details on the villains and titular Immortals.

The devs have also revealed that the main story in Immortals of Aveum will provide over twenty hours of gameplay. Immortals of Aveum will launch on July 20th, 2023, on PC and next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

The majority of trailers leading up to launch have heavily focused on action-packed spectacle, including the deep dive trailer that was released in April. It has left a lot of the game’s mythology and characterization up to fan speculation.

Most of the dialogue that has actually been revealed, as seen in the first look trailer, was ultimately divisive. The most recent “official gameplay” trailer was no exception, though you can review it yourself on the game’s YouTube channel:

Today’s new story details explain how Jak’s home was attacked, both drawing him into the world’s central conflict and awakening his magical abilities. Meanwhile, Sandrakk is another tyrant antagonist who aims to reshape the entire world. The Immortals include Jak’s mentor General Kirkan, commander Zendara, and the young Devyn.

These beats and characters are all relatively generic fantasy tropes, which does play into the hands of skeptics. The basic premise could be a foundation for some decent drama and conflict, particularly given over twenty hours to expand its world. But even with the newly revealed lore, it still looks like Immortals of Aveum has prioritized the cleverness of its mechanics.
