The popular baseball video game franchise MLB The Show is taking a significant step towards inclusivity in its upcoming release, MLB The Show 24. Players can create and play a female ballplayer for the first time in the series’ history. This is coming in the beloved Road to the Show career mode.
The upcoming addition, now titled “Road to the Show: Women Pave Their Way,” will provide players interested in pursuing a baseball career as a woman with an opportunity in-game. The mode will include a distinct storyline that evolves alongside the player’s journey, focusing on the challenges and successes experienced by women in the sport.
Players will also form a close friendship with another female baseball player named Mia Lewis, who apparently will be important in the story. According to a PlayStation Blog post written by the game’s design director, the developers wanted to highlight the significance of authenticity in creating this new experience. Inspiration was derived from real-life baseball personalities like Toni Stone, one of the earliest women to play professional baseball.
“I am proud of MLB the Show for taking a chance of applying real life change into the game. To me, this project is a great opportunity for the world to be informed of women who play baseball and that taking their skills to the next level is possible. My hopes for this project is to educate others that women/girls do play baseball and that they are capable of competing in this game at every level.”

It was also taken from Kelsie Whitmore’s experience, who is one of the developers. Whitemore is a Women’s USA Baseball National Team member and the 2022 USA Baseball Sportswoman of the Year.
Additionally, the mode will feature new commentary, MLB network segments, and other content specifically designed for the female player’s journey. It’s not something we often think about, but it’s pretty strange that there was no female inclusivity in MLB The Show until now. I don’t really play many sports games, but I know that even NBA 2K has female basketball players.
Hopefully, this is just another step in sports games offering more inclusion.
