The latest State of Play event has given fans an extensive look into the upcoming action-RPG, Final Fantasy XVI, which is set to release on PlayStation 5 on June 22. Featuring a new gameplay trailer, viewers were treated to an in-depth exploration of the exciting combat system, Eikon battles, and various RPG elements.
Final Fantasy XVI, the next mainline installment in the long-standing franchise, follows the protagonist, Clive Rosfield, as he wields the powers of various Eikons to defy his tragic destiny. Naoki Yoshida, the game’s producer, shared new gameplay footage and detailed the game’s story, world, and combat system during the State of Play event.
The game is set in the realm of Valisthea, where players can access a World Map to navigate different locations as they progress through the story. As Clive encounters various Eikons, he will learn a range of unique abilities that will help him overcome the challenges he faces. Final Fantasy XVI’s real-time action combat, a departure from the series’ traditional turn-based system, allows for a more dynamic and immersive gameplay experience.
Yoshida also introduced a host of supporting characters and allies, including Cidolfus, Clive’s mentor, and Jill, a childhood friend. These characters will accompany Clive on his journey, providing AI-driven support during battles. In addition, Torgal, Clive’s loyal hound, will aid him during gameplay, responding to both AI and direct player commands.

Cid’s Hideaway, accessible at a certain point in the game, serves as a hub for players to purchase weapons, armor, and consumables, as well as to undertake side quests and learn more about the world of Valisthea. With a range of “timely accessories” designed to enhance the gameplay experience for those less experienced in action games, Final Fantasy XVI offers an enjoyable and accessible experience for all players.

The standout feature of the game is the breathtaking Eikon vs. Eikon battles, which play out in real-time, offering players the opportunity to control their own Eikon during these massive-scale boss battles. Each confrontation is unique, featuring varied gameplay that ranges from 3D scrolling shooters to wrestling matches with devastating attacks.
As the release date approaches, more information about the game’s content, including side and end-game content, is expected to be revealed. With the main theme penned and performed by Japanese recording artist Kenshi Yonezu, Final Fantasy XVI promises to deliver an unforgettable gaming experience.
