Final Fantasy XVI is an upcoming action role-playing game and the sixteenth installment in Square Enix’s main Final Fantasy series. The game takes place on the continent of Valisthea, where six factions are on the edge of war owing to the spread of a malady known as the Blight. Final Fantasy XVI will be available on PlayStation 5 and is scheduled to be released in mid-2023.
Final Fantasy XVI is being developed by Square Enix’s Creative Business Unit III, the same group responsible for the production of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV. The main development staff consists of Naoki Yoshida as producer, who also serves as the director in Final Fantasy XIV; Hiroshi Takai as director, known for his work on the SaGa series and The Last Remnant; Kazutoyo Maehiro as creative director and original screenwriter.
Final Fantasy XVI was first announced on September 16, 2020, at the PlayStation 5 Showcase event as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Basic development and game scenario work in Final Fantasy XVI was completed by the end of 2020. Yoshida claimed in April 2022 that the game was in its last stages of production, and a teaser released in June 2022 revealed a 2023 release date. The game will have a story-focused mode and an action-focused mode. Players will also be able to personalize their character in an action-oriented mode. The narrative will be the same for both forms. The release date was pushed out to the Summer of 2023, and a new teaser with story elements and gameplay footage was showcased in October 2022.
In a recent interview with the Final Fantasy XVI development team, Famitsu reported that the game is already 95% complete. The team also noted that the announcement of the exact release date might occur later this year. As anticipated, it will be a time-limited PS5 exclusive upon its release in Summer 2023 before being eligible for release on other platforms.
