Cyan, the game studio behind best-selling titles Myst and Riven, has announced the release of their latest puzzle adventure game, Firmament, on May 18 for PC and Mac via Steam. The game will be compatible with both flat screens and virtual reality headsets. PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR2, and PlayStation 4 versions are set to follow at a later, yet unspecified date.
Set in a steampunk world, Firmament invites players to explore its environments with the deep world-building Cyan Worlds is known for. The game’s settings feel entirely plausible, encouraging players to uncover the larger purpose behind each meticulously crafted realm.
As players progress through the game, they will carry a device called an “Adjunct,” which serves as an interface for interacting with various devices scattered throughout the Realms of Firmament. By solving intricate puzzles using the Adjunct, players will move closer to unlocking the many secrets held within the game.
Firmament offers a rich narrative experience as players are not entirely alone in their journey. Accompanied by a mysterious apparition with her own story to tell, players will be introduced to three unique Realms, each harboring its own secrets and mysteries. The game challenges players to question the purpose of these Realms and the trustworthiness of their ghostly companion.
The central mystery of Firmament revolves around the seemingly abandoned realms and the enigmatic machines populating the world. Players must uncover the machines’ purpose and their own role in this grand enigma by exploring, discovering, solving, and revealing the truth.
Firmament has been designed with both virtual reality and 2D displays in mind. It supports Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Rift S, and Quest 2 via Oculus Link for virtual reality play. The game offers various comfort level features for both new and experienced VR users, including free roam and teleport modes, smooth or snap turning, quick travel up stairs and ladders, vertical height quantization, and more.
