Flashback 2, developer and publisher Microids’ new action cyberpunk sequel to the classic sci-fi platformer, will officially release later this year in November. Today’s new trailer features gameplay and showcases all of the content in the Collector’s Edition and Limited Edition.
Flashback 2 will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and current or last-gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox. The Collector’s Edition will only arrive on PlayStation and the Switch, but Xbox fans can still get their hands on the Limited Edition. You can watch today’s new gameplay trailer for the highly anticipated sequel on the Microids YouTube channel:
Flashback 2 was originally expected to launch last winter, until it was delayed back in August 2022. It may be a little disappointing that the wait will turn out to be a full year, but it does imply the game didn’t just require a light polishing. Hopefully, any serious issues will finally be resolved by November, and it isn’t pushed back again.
There’s no denying that the new visuals in Flashback 2 look very sleek and stylish. And although there are 3D environments this time around, they appear to be used for depth and generally maintain the same kind of gameplay style.
Still, there is still no true substitute for hand-drawn artwork. That was a signature look for the original’s gorgeous backgrounds. It’s possible that Flashback 2 simply wanted to avoid comparisons altogether, but it does feel like a very different world as a result.
While Flashback 2 likely won’t be the pioneer that the previous installment was, it does feel consistent with its themes and adds an intriguing gameplay rhythm.
The Collector’s Edition includes a decent figure that’s fairly tall but has lesser details. It’s nice that PlayStation fans will receive a digital copy of the classic, to make the experience feel complete, though it’s a shame it was strangely omitted for other users.
