Fluffy Horde, the unusual side-scroller that blends in tower defense and real-time strategy, has just revealed that it will finally get an Xbox port four years after launch. In a new tweet, publisher RedDeer Games has revealed that Fluffy Horde will be available on Xbox consoles on December 23rd, 2022:
Fluffy Horde was a pretty strange game, from developer Turtle Juice, who unfortunately hasn’t developed any other indies since. However, Fluffy Horde did recently get a Nintendo Switch launch last month, renewing some interest. Turtle Juice’s official Twitter account is calling for testers for “Seraphim#0728”, but there have been very few updates on new titles over the years.
Fluffy Horde is a bizarre example of enjoyable and controlled chaos. Although it has a kitchen sink approach, and wacky art design, the gameplay is all smoothly connected and amusing.
Taking on a humorous approach is often one of the most reliable features of an indie. It’s always going to feel a little more forgiving, and if devs can muster some genuine wit, it helps to overlook any budgetary constraints. A good example of that is the runaway success of Cult of the Lamb, which flaunted its sense of humor early on, even for smaller details like the resource management tasks.
Fluffy Horde is a pretty satisfying experience on PC, and the Nintendo Switch’s mobility also lends itself to the devs’ unique style of maniacal arcade gameplay. However, it remains to be seen if that’ll be so successful on Xbox consoles.
Either way, it does deserve another look, and it arrives just in time for the holidays. There’s a surprising amount of content, but many fans have argued that there’s little in the way of replay value. Fluffy Horde is sort of a novelty act, which likely benefits most as an oddity.
