Square Enix’s upcoming RPG Forspoken has just announced that the release date will be pushed back to January 24, 2023. The original release date was scheduled for October 11th, marking a 3-month delay to finish “polishing” the game.
Here’s the official statement from Forspoken’s Twitter feed:
Apparently, some “key partners” felt the game would benefit from some more time, even though all of the game elements are complete.
This strategy is growing in popularity, because even though it disappoints fans, the honesty also earns their respect. It also generally produces better final results. Few things are worse than a bugged, messy launch. A failed launch stifles interest far more than waiting a couple months.
Impatient fans won’t have to wait long for another update, as the statement concludes that the devs will share more sometime this summer. Since all the game elements are technically finished, fans might still expect some big teases.
Most responses to the delay have been supportive, noting that a January release will be healthier due to reduced competition.
October is too close to the holiday season, when a barrage of AAA titles will cannibalize each other for gift sales. God of War Ragnarok just revealed its new release date for November 2022, which will also see the launch of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Forspoken is an open-world game that emphasizes map traversal mechanics, and it will be driven by a sprawling narrative. Players take on the role of Frey, a New Yorker that’s transported to another world and must use brand-new magic abilities to return home.
There’ll be familiar RPG elements such as crafting, experience grinding, and so forth. The game will be available for PlayStation 5 or PC, and you can still pre-order now.
