When I was contacted by the team behind Frank and Drake, I knew I was in for a unique experience, if nothing else. I had never heard of the game and avoided research going in, so as to have a truly first-hand experience of what that game had to offer. What I found was a game that struck an impressive balance between visual and narrative sophistication and a story about the human condition.

Frank and Drake, two individuals bound by an enigmatic force, find themselves thrust into a conspiracy that poses a threat to their very existence. Sharing the same apartment but destined never to meet, they embark on a quest to unravel the secrets that shroud their lives. Frank battles his fading connection to the world by day, while Drake, afflicted by a severe sun allergy, navigates the world under the cover of darkness. With only sticky notes left around their shared dwelling to communicate with, they must solve the supernatural threat they face and do so in only six days.

The premise of Frank and Drake sets the stage for a compelling and unique narrative that will effortlessly capture your attention. The concept of two protagonists, sharing the same apartment yet never being able to meet, adds an intriguing layer of mystery and tension to the story, and is introduced in a way that feels believable yet makes you wonder if there’s something suspicious going on behind the scenes. The contrasting struggles of Frank’s mental illness and Drake’s isolating allergies create a dynamic that explores themes of isolation, identity, and perseverance.

Once you realize you’re in a race against time, limited to a mere six days, you’re hit with a sense of urgency that heightens the stakes, making you more and more engaged in unraveling the conspiracy that threatens Frank and Drake’s lives as the game goes on.

The reliance on written notes as the primary means of communication between Frank and Drake emphasizes the characters’ isolation, making them feel miles apart even as they share an apartment and players control both characters along their shared journey. The blend of supernatural elements with relatable human experiences generates an intriguing juxtaposition, allowing for a narrative that is both grounded and fantastical. Frank and Drake’s compelling and unique narrative promises to deliver a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant experience, and one that is definitively cinematic, which is clearly what the developers were going for and is thanks in no small part to the game’s presentation.

Frank and Drake’s journey is accompanied by a visually stunning graphical style that perfectly captures the disconcerting and dreamlike atmosphere enveloping their lives. Employing the technique of rotoscoping, each frame is painstakingly hand-drawn over filmed footage, resulting in an uncanny blend of reality and fiction. This visually striking approach adeptly mirrors the extraordinary nature of Frank and Drake’s existence, as they endeavor to blend into an otherwise ordinary world.

For the first ten minutes of my playthrough, I did nothing but hit the screenshot button over and over again to capture the unique presentation that the game was throwing at me.

The game wants to sell you on an emotional, dreary world, and the game’s rotoscoping serves this purpose by enhancing the sense of immersion and emotional resonance. The painstakingly drawn frames imbue the characters’ movements and expressions with an authenticity that can be difficult to achieve with traditional animation techniques, letting you see each microscopic emotional gesture in the faces of the characters. This attention to detail helps you to connect more deeply with the characters, empathize with their struggles, and become emotionally invested in their journey.

By employing rotoscoping, Frank and Drake is able to establish a distinct and captivating visual identity. It is hard to say the game would be as impactful without it.

Oriole City, the backdrop for this intriguing tale, comes alive with its richly detailed and exquisitely illustrated setting. The world is familiar, yet alien, being a strange amalgamation of something completely new and made up and yet resembling somewhere real you’ve been before. It is hard to ignore this strange sense of deja vu and uncanniness, which permeates through the whole game.

The heart of Frank and Drake lies in its storytelling, which effortlessly weaves together elements of mystery, adventure, and the human condition. The narrative unfolds with a gripping pace, ensuring you remain engrossed in the pair’s plight throughout their shared journey. The bond that Frank and Drake develop, despite their physical separation, resonates as a testament to the power of humanity and collaboration in the face of adversity.

The gameplay mechanics of Frank and Drake resemble the classic point-and-click adventure game. The intricate environments of Oriole City are ripe with hidden bits to discover, and the means to progress isn’t always immediately apparent, requiring players to observe their surroundings closely, interact with objects, and at times decipher cryptic puzzles. At times, it isn’t always clear what you need to do or why the game is stopping you to do it, and you’ll have to keep an eye out for objects on that screen that jitter, asking you to interact with them.

The world of Oriole City and its enigmatic inhabitants provide a rich tapestry for you to explore, and the branching narrative with a player-decision-driven ending ensures a personalized and rewarding journey for each player or playthrough. Though the game may be a bit slow and heavy on the narrative for your average gamer, the striking visuals and thought-provoking storyline is poised to captivate the patient player, creating an experience nobody could forget.
