After 14 years, Harry Krueger, the Game Director for Housemarque’s acclaimed PS5 exclusive Returnal, has announced his decision to depart from the studio. Krueger’s departure marks a significant moment for Housemarque, as he has been a key figure in the studio’s success, particularly with the development of Returnal.

In a statement, Krueger expressed deep gratitude for his time at Housemarque and said that he is leaving the company with “nothing but deep gratitude for the past, and a glowing optimism for the future.” In addition, he praised the team at Housemarque, saying they are some of the most talented and wonderful individuals he has ever met.

“We really shook the pillars of heaven together, and I will forever be proud of all the amazing things we’ve accomplished as a studio. Departing from Housemarque was a very difficult decision for me, but I’m leaving the company with nothing but deep gratitude for the past, and a glowing optimism for the future – with an exciting new project in the works, a fantastic team that’s stronger than ever, and the continuous support of Sony and Playstation Studios, I know that Housemarque’s brightest chapter has yet to be written”

Ilari Kuittinen, General Manager and Co-Founder of Housemarque, also commented on Krueger’s departure, saying that he has been vital in shaping the studio’s trajectory. Kuittinen added that Krueger’s departure is a great opportunity for future leaders to carry on and improve.

“Throughout Harry’s tenure, we’ve seen the ‘death of Arcade’, and also achieved growth milestones we once only dreamed of. Harry’s passion and direction have been vital in sculpting our studio’s trajectory to the current scale. The rebirth of ‘Arcade’ , defined by Returnal, speaks volumes of his impact and vision, and is a great point for future leaders to take over and keep improving upon.”

Krueger has worked at Housemarque since 2008. He is best known for his work on the games Outland, Resogun, and Nex Machina. He was also the Game Director for Housemarque’s most recent title, Returnal. Despite Krueger’s departure, Housemarque is looking ahead to the future with optimism. The studio is currently working on a new project, which is expected to be released in the coming years.
