Afterdream, an upcoming 2D horror and adventure indie from developer Jesse Makkonen, will officially be published by Gamera Games, the team who championed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge.
Afterdream will be available on both PC and consoles. An exact release date hasn’t been confirmed, but it’s due sometime this year, and you can wishlist the game on Steam today. Here’s the big publishing announcement from Gamera Games’ Twitter feed:
Today’s new trailer for Afterdream does a terrific job of selling the overall mood, including some clever editing and a ticking clock literally built into the music.
But Afterdreams’ art design instantly makes an impression, blending elements of nearly every kind of classic ghost story.
The vintage and weathered colored scheme calls to mind old school ghost stories, from The Haunting to The Others. But its surrealism feels as twisted as Silent Hill, with a touch of World of Horror. And even the very combination of those things promises to result in proper tension.
There is simply a strong sense of intensely creative imagery, which is very important in psychological horror. The iconography itself needs to transport and unsettle you with the unexpected and the strange. And Afterdream clearly has real potential to fulfill that atmosphere.
Either way, Gamera Games has built a reliable reputation with their fanbase, following the enormous success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. The game was even nominated for Best Action Game at The Game Awards 2022. It absolutely nailed the arcade experience, and also effectively handled some beloved IP.
Most recently, Gamera Games published roguelite RPG The Last Spell, which just launched a couple of weeks ago to lots of praise. So, the publishers have distinguished themselves with very well-placed support.
