Gord, an upcoming survival and dark fantasy city builder from developer Covenant.dev and publisher Team17, will officially launch in summer 2023. A new gameplay trailer showcases all of the key mechanics, enemies, and lore.
Gord will be available on PC via Steam, as well as next-gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox fans. There’s still no word on a port for the Nintendo Switch or last-gen consoles. You can watch today’s new gameplay trailer on the Team17 YouTube channel:
A new blog post on the game’s Steam page notes that Gord was developed by creatives who worked on Frostpunk and The Witcher 3, and it is very noticeable. Today’s trailer for Gord hints at the same degree of creativity and attitude. There are brutal forces and consequences, rugged environments, and twisted creatures.
Although Gord will likely be summed up as a Witcher city builder, there’s a definite sense of unique culture in Gord’s mythology. The art design is generally impressive, with lots of fine details that are not compromised by their bleak world.
Also, the survival concepts blend well. The rustic tools and structures built from basic resources make the people feel more vulnerable. Familiar concepts from traditional survival games, such as sanity and illness, will be interesting to manage on a larger scale.
There will also be dedicated quests, which aren’t really mentioned in today’s trailer. But hopefully those narrative opportunities aren’t too thin, or reliant on the city building. It would be a shame if Gord’s world couldn’t distinguish itself more. It would’ve been nice if the trailer delved into some of the more unique mechanics, such as the customizable scenarios that will let players get really creative.
