GrimGrimoire OnceMore, a remaster of the original strategy RPG from 2007, has announced that it will finally launch in the West on April 4th, 2023. It will be available on both generations of PlayStation consoles, as well as the Nintendo Switch. Today’s announcement coincided with a brief trailer, which you can review on publisher NIS America’s YouTube channel here:
GrimGrimoire OnceMore already released in Japan last year, and it was only announced for a Western release during last September’s NIS America showcase. It’s always a delight to see more obscure games finally get a port in the West, especially when the remaster and original have over a decade between them.
The updated version of the game will boast an altered screen ratio and updated graphics. While visual improvement are expected for any remaster, it’s nice that the devs have added some new content, too. Players will now have access to “Grand Magic” spells, and although it’s unclear how the mechanics will work, they have the potential to “turn the tides” according to the official game site.
Although the original GrimGrimoire’s story was always divisive, there’s no denying the visual flair. It’s very colorful, with animations that vibrantly represent the combat and environments without becoming an indistinguishable mess.
As a result, it will definitely be interesting to discover how a modern, polished version will play, especially on a next-gen console. The PlayStation 5 provides some remarkable technology. And although GrimGrimoire OnceMore is a simple RTS side scroller, it involves some dense mechanics that could be fun with some of the PlayStation 5 features.
RTS games have evolved greatly since 2007, so this remaster may struggle to find a modern audience. Hopefully, GrimGrimoire OnceMore comes to the PS Plus service sometime soon.
