Arc System Works has unveiled its plans for Guilty Gear: Strive’s third season, including a new DLC character named Johnny and a comprehensive Season 3 update. Both of these major announcements are scheduled to roll out on August 24, indicating the official kick-off of the game’s third season.
To be priced at $6.99 or 880 yen, Johnny is not just an addition to the game roster; he comes with a rich backstory. As the Jellyfish Pirates’ leader and a Hirofumi Style swordsmanship master, Johnny is a world-class outlaw. However, his motto, “Help the weak and sprain the strong,” has garnered him significant popularity.
Famed for his laid-back disposition, Johnny’s character really comes to the fore when the going gets tough. He is a constant, keeping his cool in challenging situations and often lightening the atmosphere with a timely joke. More than a fighter, Johnny also acts as a protector, rescuing girls orphaned by war and offering them a place on his ship. He treats the members of the Jellyfish Pirates as family, often stating that their safety comes before his own.
When it comes to gameplay, Johnny has been rated as having a three out of five ease of use score. His unseen strikes, coupled with his natural-born gambler traits, are bound to add an intriguing layer to the battles.
In conjunction with the DLC character announcement, Arc System Works is introducing the Season Pass 3, to be priced at $24.99 or 2,750 yen. The pass includes not only Johnny but also promises three additional playable characters, to be announced and released in 2023 and 2024. Furthermore, the pass includes two new battle stages and extra color schemes for Season 3 characters, as well as colors #13 to #15.
In addition, the developers have provided a glimpse into the free Season 3 update, which comes packed with new mechanics. To start with, six out of the 15 initial roster characters are set to receive new special moves, with more characters expected to follow in subsequent updates. An added offensive mechanic, called “Wild Assault,” will be accessible to all characters, enabling a lunging attack to the front with varying properties depending on the character. Lastly, a new defensive mechanic, the “Deflect Shield,” will empower all characters to block any type of attack, including overheads, lows, or projectiles.
