Activision CEO Bobby Kotick called an all-hands meeting with Activision-Blizzard-King employees. During the meeting, Kotick hinted at the return of Guitar Hero. In Kotick’s view, Activision and Microsoft are uniquely positioned to collaborate since they have the best video game franchises in the world. A mention of Guitar Hero followed, which set off alarms in everyone’s mind.
This could just be a random name he threw out from a series they own, but it seems unlikely. Activision has many licenses, and Guitar Hero specifically popping up doesn’t feel random. You only think things up like that if you were recently talking or thinking about that brand. Since Activision is only days away from being acquired they likely are speaking to Microsoft about future releases.
If you have kids, like I do, you’ll notice that rhythm games are making a huge comeback in apps. Guitar Hero would be great to return and put all of the other games to shame on mobile. Alternatively, it could also come back as a game for consoles, although I don’t see the plastic guitar making a comeback.
It is likely that if Activision were to bring back Guitar Hero, it would be less of a home-arcade device and more like competition for Rocksmith. Rocksmith is the at-home personal guitar tutor who lets you learn guitar and master multiple songs. It has been pretty much unchallenged since it came onto the scene, and Guitar Hero’s name with Activision, King, or Microsoft really can’t fail. Ubisoft is a big company, but nowhere near as big as those giants.
We’ll have to see if this was a real nod to future development or if this was just some name that was taken out of nowhere. Hopefully, we’ll hear about the return of this beloved franchise. Thanks, WindowsCentral for breaking this news.
