The long-awaited release of Helldivers 2 on Steam has had a tough start. Arrowhead Game Studios’ developers have faced problems with the game’s matchmaking and crashes. Even though the game was initially popular, these issues have worried the player base.
Helldivers 2 is a cooperative action game published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PS5 and PC via Steam. It had a great launch, but that seemed to have gone down as more players joined. In terms of concurrent players, it ranks 18th on Steam and is the third highest-selling game by revenue, surpassing popular titles such as Palworld and Call of Duty. Despite this, users have reported performance issues with the game, especially on PC.
Arrowhead Game Studios’ CEO, Johan Pilestedt, openly talked about the problems they faced during the game’s launch. In an official statement on the Helldivers Discord, Pilestedt admitted that the studio is currently dealing with “a bit of a crisis mode” (thanks IGN) as they work on matchmaking issues, crashes, and login problems. He said these problems were unexpected and happened because lots of players started playing the game when it launched. Pilestedt reassured players that the team was working hard to fix the issues.
One of the specific problems encountered by Helldivers 2 is related to the quickplay feature, as detailed in a separate post on Discord where Arrowhead promised to fix it.
“I just wanted to let you all know we’re working as hard as we can on resolving these, the volume of players exposed some shenanigans in the system that went past many, many, many hours or testing. We have tried resolving it on the backend only but it seems like we will have to patch the game to resolve the issue. Sorry for this and thank you for your patience. For now I recommend to team up with people from the community as joining friends work fine. I hope you are enjoying the experience once you get into the game.”Johan Pilestedt
With the launch difficulties in mind, Arrowhead and Sony will definitely focus on improving the game’s performance to keep players interested. I honestly really like the look of the game, so I’m one of the people hoping they can fix all of these issues.
