Beyond These Stars, an upcoming sci-fi and fantasy city builder from developer Balancing Monkey Games and publisher Hooded Horse, has just been announced with a new gameplay trailer.

A release window has not been officially revealed, but the game’s new Steam page suggests that the devs are aiming for a 2023 release. Beyond These Stars will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. You can watch the full trailer on Hooded Horse’s official YouTube channel here:

As it turns out, today’s trailer opens by revealing that Beyond These Stars is set on the back of a space whale. This should immediately bring The Wandering Village to mind because it generated a lot of buzz, and we also reviewed that game back in September 2022.

However, Beyond These Stars is indicating that the developers were aiming for something a little more profound, and even the name reinforces that. There’s a signature patience and mystery from classic sci-fi, in addition to cosmic themes. The object of the game doesn’t seem to involve a lot of action, so much as experiencing a grand journey.

These qualities support the trailer title’s promise for relaxation. Even the art design in today’s trailer is filled with cool tones, as opposed to the many bright and dangerous environments of similar titles. For example, another promising indie called Flooded just announced its release date today, and the premise revolves around surviving a shrinking island.

The graphics in space are distinctly inferior to the settings on the back of the whale. But there’s also a grainy and tactile look for the environments, which seems really appealing. The only thing that feels a little out of place was the trailer music, which was oddly playful, and less like a space epic.
