Xenonauts 2, an upcoming turn-based strategy sequel to the hit game about defending Earth from alien invasion, has just received a new trailer featuring key gameplay mechanics. A release window has not been announced yet, but fans can wishlist the game on Steam today. Here’s the full trailer from publisher Hooded Horse’s YouTube channel:
Today’s trailer is surprisingly thorough, showcasing the full gauntlet of responsibilities that players will need to master all over again to protect Earth.
There’s nothing particularly revolutionary here, which feels a little disappointing after all these years to elaborate. And the graphics haven’t been improved enough to make the game more accessible for mainstream audiences. But this series certainly knows how to please its fanbase, and perhaps expectations are a little too high after the success of the first installment.
Xenonauts basically perfected the XCOM formula, and later proved to be a satisfying alternative when the XCOM reboot and its sequels disappointed longtime fans. Xenonauts 2 may not add very much to the first game from 2014, but at the very least, it seems that it’ll continues to do everything right.
The mechanics are just as dense and compelling as before, offering a tremendous amount of freedom that helps global strategy games like Humankind or Civilization thrive. It’s also one of the highlights that helped the game stand apart from XCOM’s ongoing, struggling franchise. With so many potential outcomes, smaller decisions become more meaningful and shed some of their irritating grind.
Also, Xenonauts 2 will be a standalone game. This will be more encouraging for uncertain newcomers, who may not feel inclined to delve into the first installment from nearly ten years ago. This epic genre can be intimidating, so hopefully the series will find a new audience.
