Unholy, an upcoming action, horror and puzzle game from developer Duality Games and publisher Hook, will officially launch on July 20th, 2023.

Unholy will be available on PC via Steam, where a playable demo was just released earlier this week. There’s currently no word on a console port. You can watch today’s new announcement trailer on the Hook YouTube channel, which features the basic premise and some new footage:

Unholy has built a lot of buzz since it was first announced last year, thanks to its psychological approach, stunning graphics and inventive mechanics. Following the release of nearly twenty minutes of gameplay on IGN, and the new demo, Unholy has greatly distanced itself from Agony.

There are some deeply profound ideas driven by a straightforward plot that seems easy to invest in. Today’s trailer delves into both, presenting all of the primary conflicts, and proving just how naturally they coincide with an entertaining adventure experience. There’s an ambitious, impressive balance between thought and thrill, and they even seem to guide one another.

The notion of combat determined by your emotions is a remarkably clever mechanic, too. It creates a completely different context for many of the traditional interactions that players are accustomed to in the horror genre.

Overall, today’s teaser serves as a nice summary of Unholy’s tone and gameplay, though it doesn’t introduce anything especially new. It is just as effective as previous trailers, and sure to intrigue the unfamiliar, but players are already free to be won over by existing teasers or the demo.

The most compelling thing in today’s trailer is how many questions it raises, in terms of perspective, and it’ll be fascinating to see how the game explores or answers them.
