Elden Ring just released to fans worldwide with very few tutorials other than the bare necessities. This has left many players fumbling for answers as they defeat monsters in The Lands Between. One of the systems that don’t get enough explanation is the Spirit Ashes and how you upgrade them.
The Spirit Ashes are the companion system that allows you to summon allies like the wolves and jellyfish. You can level these creatures and NPCs you summon by unlocking a process called Spirit Tuning. To open it, you’ll need to complete a quest.
How to Unlock Spirit Tuning in Elden Ring
On your way up Storm Hill towards Stormveil Castle, you’ll find a woman named Roderika wearing a red shawl in a shack by the road. Progress through all of her dialogue, and you’ll get the Spirit Jellyfish ashes and a quest about defeating Rodrick. Defeat Rodrick, and she will appear in the Roundtable Hold by the fireplace.

Speak with Roderika once she appears by the fireplace and progress through her dialogue. After you’re finished talking to her, speak to Smith Master Hewg down the hall. Once again, you’ll return to Roderika, and this time you’ll tell her that Hewg thinks she has a knack for Spirit Tuning. Then, you’ll convince her to try it out after you get Hewg’s help.
When you come back to the Roundtable Hold a little later, Roderika will have her area across from Hewg. Now she’ll be able to help you level up your spirits as long as you have either Grave Glovewort or Ghost Glovewort.
You’ll be able to find Grave Glovewort and Ghost Glovewort in catacomb dungeons. Like Smithing Stones, the Grave Glovewort and Ghost Glovewort will be separated by different levels in quality and will support a certain level of enhancement. In addition, they can be found all over the map, like how you can see Ghost Glovewort (1) all around the Ainsel River.
You can buy the Glovewort you need from the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold after bringing them the Ghost-Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing (1). To be able to purchase Grave Glovewort, you’ll need to provide the Husks with the Grave-Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing (1). There are three of these you can find, each allowing you to buy two additional levels of Glovewort.
