Dwarf Fortress is one of the most complex colony simulator games ever created thanks to its over 20-year development. This title is trying to get as close to real-life simulation as it can inside a game, and that of course means tending to the basic needs of any living thing. While there will be the need for food and drinks, you’ll also need to ensure that your Dwarves can keep clean with soap.

Allowing a Dwarf the resources to clean themselves will make them happier and lower the chance of a negative impact on their health. Here’s all the information you need to know about how to make soap in Dwarf Fortress.

If you want to make Soap, you’ll first need to make sure that you create a Soap Maker’s Workshop and the right materials to create your first bar. You can select the Soap Maker’s Workshop from the Build menu and then click on the “Workshops” section. Once you place the workshop, you’ll need the right materials to make your soap.

You’ll need two different materials in order to create Soap, lye plus tallow or oil. Lye is the easiest to get since you can make ash in a wood furnace and then lye from that at an Ashery, which is also accessible from the Workshop menu. You can get tallow or oil from a few different places, including:

  • Butchering an animal and rendering the fat in a kitchen to create Tallow
  • Mill seeds with a quern or a millstone and press that seed paste in a Screw Press to get oil
  • Press olives in a Screw Press to get oil

Growing olives in your fortress will likely be the easiest way for you to get a constant flow of oil, as you won’t be able to rely on hunting all the time and you need your seeds to grow more plants. Once you have both resources, combine them at the Soap Maker’s Workshop to create soap.

Hygiene is important to your Dwarves, as they’ll sometimes need to clean mud and blood off themselves and will sometimes resort to bathing in murky puddles. If you provide them with soap resources, they’ll gain the happy thought of having cleaned themselves with soap, boosting morale around your fortress. Once you have a hospital up and running, you may want to designate some specifically for your patients and staff.

That’s all the information you need to know about making soap in the game. Be sure to head to the Dwarf Fortress section of our website for more detailed guides.
